What is more important, experience or passion?

What would you rather see when considering a new hire, experience or passion? A passionate person will be proactive and learn quickly, care about their work, and enjoy doing it. An experienced person knows that a small detail can have a big impact, and perseveres when working with the occasional legacy system or process. While experience and passion is not mutually exclusive, a lot of people will lose their passion as they gain their experience. At some point they say to themselves, "I'm good enough already and I'd rather focus on what I already know than try to learn something completely new". Those with this mentality are quickly left behind and before long, they've forgotten all about the excitement of learning and its impact on their success. So what should you truly look for in a new hire?

A passion for learning

The quest for knowledge should never end, and having this mindset is what separates the best from the rest. If you're truly passionate and never stop learning, the experience can always come later. With that said, what would I rather see when considering a new hire, experience or passion? Both.

The larger the island of knowledge, the longer the shoreline of wonder.
